More than 1200 anglers and 420 boats converged in Port Isabel/South Padre Island, Texas Aug. 3-7 to participate in the 72nd annual Texas International Fishing Tournament.
Anglers of all ages competed in bay, offshore and tarpon divisions with spectacular catches that included a 550# blue marlin brought in by angler Derek Dick fishing aboard the "El Cameron". A total of 79 billfish were caught during the two days of fishing--73 of which were released. Bay anglers also found great fishing with redfish, specked trout and flounder brought in to the dock. Registrants are restricted to weighing in the single heaviest fish of each eligible species per day of fishing. Winners are determined are the basis of cumulative points for two days of fishing.
Michael Zinda, fishing aboard the "Irish Anne" was named the Texas Offshore Grand Champion. In the Bay Division, Federico Toussaint took top honors with 28.5 pounds of fish. For many, it was the junior anglers stealing the show with their piggy perch stringer catches of hardheads, sand trout and other species. For a full list of winners, check out our Winners List.
